A dark yellow oil obtained from the seeds of the tree Pongamia pinnata (family Fabaceae (Leguminosae)) and used in India as a treatment for certain skin diseases, as oil for lamps, as a bio-fuel, and as a pesticide.
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in John Lindley (1799–1865), botanist and horticulturist. From Tamil puṅku, puṅkam the tree Pongamia pinnata + oil.
