OriginLate 19th century; earliest use found in Isabella Bird (1831–1904), traveller. From Japanese makimono handscroll that is unrolled on a flat surface for reading from maki-, combining stem of maku to roll (up) + mono thing. The variant makemono has no parallel in Japanese; it is perhaps influenced by kakemono. Compare French makimono, makemono. |
