Used with reference to upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage, often with vomiting of blood, caused by one or more tears of the mucosa at or near the gastroesophageal junction, most commonly resulting from a prior episode of severe vomiting or retching, especially after excessive alcohol ingestion. Origin1950s. From the names of G. Kenneth Mallory, American pathologist, and Soma Weiss, American physician, who described the syndrome. |
