A Chinese genus of sauropod dinosaurs of the Jurassic period, characterized by exceptionally long necks and related to the diplodocids, though now usually placed in a separate family; a dinosaur of this genus.
Origin
1950s; earliest use found in Scientia Sinica. From scientific Latin Mamenchisaurus, genus name from Chinese Mǎménqī (also transliterated Mamenchi), the name of a place in the Yibin region of Sichuan province, China, where fossil remains were found + -saurus.
