A rare, usually fatal disorder caused by persistent measles virus infection, typically occurring in children or adolescents within 3 to 10 years after the initial measles infection and characterized by inflammation and degeneration of both grey and white matter of the brain, resulting in behavioural and neurological symptoms; abbreviated SSPE.
