A hydrated carbonate and hydroxide of magnesium and aluminium, Mg6Al2CO3(OH)16·4H2O, that is dimorphous with hydrotalcite, crystallizes in the hexagonal system, and occurs as soft, foliated, whitish masses having a pearly lustre and a greasy feel.

1940s. From the name of E. Manasse, Italian chemist, mineralogist and petrographer + -ite.
