A group of liberal politicians and their followers led by Richard Cobden and John Bright, influential 1840–60, which met (originally in Manchester) to advocate free trade and the reduction of state intervention in commerce and industry. Now historical.

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Benjamin Disraeli (1804–1881), prime minister and novelist.
