Origin

Mid 16th century; earliest use found in Sessions against Gardiner. From sub- + delegate, after either Anglo-Norman and Middle French subdelegat or post-classical Latin subdelegatus (frequently from 1200 in British sources; also in continental sources). Compare earlier subdelegate and later subdelegate.
