A Turkish copper coin (originally weighing approx. 2.5 grams, subsequently dropping at some mints to approx. 1.5 grams).
The coin was introduced by Ottoman Sultan Murad I (1362–89), withdrawn in 1691, and reissued under Mahmud II (1808–39). Its value fell so drastically that in 1879 it was abolished..
Origin
Late 16th century; earliest use found in Thomas Washington (fl. 1585). From Middle French, French mangor, mangour and directly from its etymon Turkish mangır a copper (rarely brass or bronze) coin (now obsolete), slang word for ‘money’, of uncertain origin.
