Attributive Designating or relating to the condensation reaction between a primary or secondary amine (usually as the hydrochloride), an aldehyde, and a compound containing an active hydrogen atom, to form a β-amino ketone. Mannich base noun the product of such a reaction.

1930s; earliest use found in Journal of the Chemical Society. From the name of Carl Mannich, German chemist, who developed the reaction.
