Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal. From sub- + plantigrade. With the use denoting a mammal of the former tribe Subplantigrada compare French subplantigrade (Latreille, 1825), scientific Latin Subplantigrada (Blyth, 1840).
