R. Kirk's name for: a type of musical instrument resembling a soprano saxophone, used in jazz music.
The instrument is principally associated with its originator..
Origin
1960s; earliest use found in The Melody Maker. Coined by the American saxophonist Roland Kirk, but of uncertain formation: the second element is after saxello (presumably with euphonic substitution of -z- for pretonic -ks-); the first element is perhaps arbitrary.
