The action or an act of serving process by a method that differs from normal procedures such as personal service, but is authorized by a court in response to special circumstances.
- Accepted procedures have varied over time and between legal systems. In England and Wales substituted service has now been replaced in official documentation by the concept of service by an ‘alternative method’ or at an ‘alternative place’ (Civil Procedure Rules 1998, as amended)..
