A body of watchmen which patrolled the streets of a city; specifically the procession of watchmen which traditionally (until 1524, and only intermittently thereafter) marched through the City of London on the eve of the festival of the nativity of St John the Baptist.

Late 16th century; earliest use found in John Stow (d. 1605), historian.
