A kind of artificial building stone made to resemble marble. More fully marezzo marble.
Origin
Late 19th century; earliest use found in Encyclopaedia Britannica. From Italian marezzo artificial marble, marbling from marezzare to water (silk), to marble, perhaps from classical Latin mare + post-classical Latin -izare, with reference to the appearance of the waves of the sea. It has also been suggested that it is ultimately based on a derivative of ancient Greek μάρμαρος.
