Early 19th century; earliest use found in Edward Moor (1771–1848), writer on Hindu mythology. From Sanskrit pradakṣiṇā, use as noun (short for pradakṣiṇā kriyā rightwards act) of feminine of pradakṣiṇa (directed) to the right from pra forth + dakṣiṇa (directed) to the right.
