In Guyana: any of several large, tree-dwelling birds resembling pheasants, having predominantly brown or black plumage; especially Penelope marail, Penelope jacquacu, and Pipile cumanensis.
Origin
Mid 18th century; earliest use found in Edward Bancroft (1744–1821), chemist and spy. Probably from Macusi marudi or a related form in another Cariban language.
