Late 19th century; earliest use found in Charles Fortnum (1820–1899), art collector and art historian. From Italian marzacotto glaze or frit used in ceramics, probably (with influence of cotto cooked) from Arabic masḥaqūniyā liquid glass, molten glass foam (perhaps via a post-classical Latin text in which the Arabic letter n was rendered as the similar-looking letter t).
