Now chiefly historical noun A kind of coat formerly worn by North American Indians, originally made of furs, later of coarse woollen cloth (as supplied by white traders). From Virginia Algonquian matchkore deerskin robe from Proto-Algonquian *mat- (empty root) + *-ixtoθ- robe, blanket.
