a mode of expression in art, literature, or music that attempts to depict subjective emotions and responses to objects and events
In expressionism, what artists aimed to express was generally their own feelings, often through strong colour, emphatic brushwork, and a calculated primitivism. The term was applied – retrospectively – to the German artists belonging to the groups called Die Brücke, and Der Blaue Reiter. It is also sometimes used of the starker German cinema, drama, and architecture of the early 20th cent. — Martin Gayford
