The same objection is often raised to the use of mankind to mean ‘human beings as a race or species’ as to the use of man in the same sense: it seems sexist. The expressions humanity, humankind, human beings, and the human race will generally fit neatly into any context where mankind might be employed and should be preferred. See also note at man¹
