(Sanskrit) Nirvana (‘blowing out’) is a term found in ancient Indian religions for the state of liberation from suffering. Best-known from Buddhism, it is the cessation of suffering that enlightened beings enter upon death. The question of what remains of consciousness in nirvana has been persistent in Buddhist philosophy.
