Most verbs that begin with the prefix re- meaning ‘again’ are spelt without a hyphen: reboot the computer; recycle domestic waste. Some people prefer to use a hyphen when the verb to which re- is attached begins with a vowel, especially e. However, spellings such as reinsure and reuse are shown in all modern British English dictionaries and forms such as reentry and reexamine in some. The hyphen is important, however, where two different meanings are involved, for example in distinguishing between re-cover (cover again) and recover (‘recuperate’), re-creation (‘creating anew’) and recreation (‘leisure’), or re-form (‘form again’) and reform (‘change for the better’)
