Romany romani (adj) gypsy, from rom gypsy man, from Sanskrit ḍomba man of a low caste of musicians. Romany words which have passed into English include cosh, didicoi, nark, pal, and rum (strange). It is likely that further research would provide evidence that the contribution of Romany to English cant and slang is larger than has been recognized
