blond or blonde? The two spellings, which are both correct, derive from the masculine (blond) and feminine (blonde) forms of the word in French. English tends to retain the distinction, at least to the extent of preferring the form blonde for women, about whom the word is most often used: She's gone blonde; Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (novel by Anita Loos). On this basis, it would be logical to write He is blond and She has blonde hair and to use blond in neutral contexts such as blond-coloured wood
