unexceptional or unexceptionable? These two words are quite close together in meaning and could be confused. Unexceptional means ‘not outstanding’, therefore ‘ordinary’ or ‘rather dull’ (an unexceptional year for wine). If a thing is unexceptionable it causes no offence or controversy: It was just that one remark – the rest of the speech was totally unexceptionable. See also note at exceptional
