- the river that forms the border between Mexico and the US state of Texas. Its Mexican name is the Rio Bravo del Norte. A dispute over this border caused the Mexican War. The Rio Grande begins in the Rocky Mountains in south-west Colorado and flows about 1 885 miles/3 033 kilometres to the Gulf of Mexico.
