Adlai Stevenson

- (1900-65) a US Democratic politician who was defeated by Dwight D Eisenhower in the 1952 and 1956 elections for US President. Stevenson was a lawyer known for his clever remarks and fine mind. He was Governor of Illinois (1949-53) and later US ambassador to the United Nations (1961-5).
