- the fort (now in San Antonio, Texas) where an army of about 4 000 Mexican soldiers killed all 187 Texans defending it in 1836. Davy Crockett and James Bowie died there. ‘Remember the Alamo!’ became a famous cry for Texas independence from Mexico. John Wayne directed and acted in a film about the battle, The Alamo (1960).
