Ambrose Bierce

- (1842-c. 1914) a US journalist who wrote realistic but satirical short stories. They were collected in In the Midst of Life (1892). He also wrote a humorous dictionary, The Devil's Dictionary (1906). Bierce disappeared in Mexico in 1914 and was never found.
