- Arthur Charles Clarke (1917-2008) an English writer of science fiction novels and books about space travel. He was best known for the very successful Stanley Kubrick film 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) which was made from his story The Sentinel (1951). Clarke lived for many years in Sri Lanka.
