Bankside
/ˈbæŋksaɪd/
/ˈbæŋksaɪd/
- an area on the south bank of the Thames in London. It is between Southwark Bridge and the area generally known as the South Bank. It is where London's theatres were in the time of Shakespeare because they were not allowed in the city itself. Since the opening of Tate Modern and the Globe Theatre at the end of the twentieth century the area has become a popular place to visit and is linked to the City by the Millennium Bridge, a new footbridge.
