Lord Kitchener

- Horatio Herbert Kitchener (1850-1916) a British soldier who commanded the army in the Sudan (1883-5), in South Africa during the Boer War (1900-02) and in India (1902-9). At the beginning of the First World War he became Secretary of State for War and was responsible for encouraging more men to join the army. He appeared on a famous poster (= large printed notice) telling people ‘Your country needs you’. He was made an earl in 1914 and died at sea during the First World War.
