  1. (1866-1943) an English writer of children's books about the adventures of animals, including Peter Rabbit, Tom Kitten, Benjamin Bunny, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Mrs Tiggywinkle and many others. Because of the quiet humour with which she describes character and social behaviour she has been compared to Jane Austen. The books have been translated into many languages including Welsh and Latin. Beatrix Potter also painted the watercolour illustrations for the stories, which are still popular in both Britain and America. She was born in London but much preferred the country and spent her later life in the Lake District.
