- a leader of the Democratic Party or the Republican Party in the US Congress. There are four floor leaders because each of the two main parties chooses its own floor leader in both the Senate and House of Representatives. The floor leader of the party that has a majority is called the majority leader and that of the other party the minority leader. Their job is to speak for their party and work to pass their bills.
