- a British horse racing event held over five days at Ascot each year in June. Members of the royal family attend some of the races, and many people go there for social reasons rather than sport. The third day of Royal Ascot is usually Ladies' Day, for which many of the women present wear large, impressive or unusual hats. see also Royal Enclosure, Season
