- (1893-1953) a US tennis player who was the leading player in the world during the 1920s. His popular name was 'Big Bill'. In 1920 he became the first American to win at Wimbledon, and he also won there in 1921 and 1930. He won the US Open seven times (1920-25 and 1929) and played in 11 Davis Cup teams.
