- the most northerly of the New England states in the US. Its popular name is the Pine Tree State, and people from Maine are called Down Easters. The capital city is Augusta and the largest city is Portland. Maine was separated from Massachusetts in 1820 as a free state under the Missouri Compromise. It is a popular area for outdoor holidays and sports, and the northern end of the Appalachian Trail is in Maine. Maine's products include paper, apples, blueberries and canned sardines (= small fish).
