- a country in southern central Africa, between Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique. Its capital city is Lilongwe and its official languages are Chichewa and English. It used to be a British colony called Nyasaland. It became independent in 1964 and is now a member of the Commonwealth. Its main exports are tea and tobacco.
