Pocahontas

- (c. 1595-1617) a Native American girl who in 1607 saved the life of Captain John Smith when he was about to be killed by her father, Chief Powhatan. She became a Christian in 1613 and changed her name to Rebecca. A year later, she married the English colonist John Rolfe and in 1616 went to England, where she created a lot of interest. She became ill and died on the way home. Her story was told in the Walt Disney cartoon film Pocahontas (1995).
