Bonny Prince Charlie
/ˌbɒni prɪns ˈtʃɑːli/
/ˌbɑːni prɪns ˈtʃɑːrli/
- (1720-88) the popular name of Prince Charles Edward Stuart, also sometimes called the Young Pretender. His father was the son of James II, the king of England, Scotland and Ireland, and Charles therefore believed that his father should be king. Many people in Scotland supported the Stuarts, and in 1745 Charles led a Scottish army against King George II. After some successes, Charles's army was defeated at the battle of Culloden. He then spent five months hiding from government soldiers in Scotland before escaping to France. He never returned to Britain. see also Flora Macdonald, Skye
