- Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822-93) the 19th US President (1877-81). He was a Republican who ended Reconstruction in the southern states. He had been a US officer in the Civil War and a lawyer. Hayes was elected President by one vote of the Electoral College. He had previously been elected to the US House of Representatives (1865-7) and was governor of Ohio (1868-72 and 1876-7). His wife was called 'Lemonade Lucy' because she would not allow alcohol in the White House.
