- (1924-2013) a novelist and screenwriter who was born in Germany, educated in England and then moved to India. Her novel about India, Heat and Dust (1975), won the Booker Prize and was also made into a film in 1983. She was the writer for many films made by Ismail Merchant and James Ivory, including Howards End (1993) and A Room with a View (1987) for which she won an Oscar.
