Brixton
/ˈbrɪkstən/
/ˈbrɪkstən/
- a district of south London. It is well known as one of the most multicultural parts of London, with large communities of Afro-Caribbean people, and smaller communities from many European, African and Asian countries. In the early 1980s there were violent protests on the streets of Brixton, called the Brixton riots, against the lack of jobs and houses, and the prejudice of some members of the police against people of other races. As a result the government spent money on improving the houses, the sports centre and the opportunities for young people in Brixton.
