- a small country in south-east Asia, on the north coast of Borneo. It has been influenced and protected by Britain since 1888, and became a member of the Commonwealth in 1984. It produces large amounts of oil and gas, and its political leader, the Sultan of Brunei, is one of the richest people in the world.
