Samuel Smiles

- (1812-1904) a Scottish writer and teacher. He believed that people could improve themselves and have better lives, and wrote books about people who had done this, including Lives of the Engineers (1861-2). He also wrote several books explaining how people could improve their lives. The most famous of these was Self-help (1859).
