Southampton
/saʊˈθæmptən/, /saʊθˈhæmptən/
/saʊˈθæmptən/, /saʊθˈhæmptən/
- a city on the south coast of England. It is one of Britain's most important ports. For much of the 20th century it was the main port for passenger ships crossing the Atlantic. Some passenger ships still use the port of Southampton, but it now deals mainly with container ships (= ships that carry goods in large metal boxes).
