Carson McCullers

- (1917-67) a US writer from the state of Georgia, where most of her novels and short stories were set. She said she wrote about 'spiritual isolation'. The novels included The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (1940), Reflection in a Golden Eye (1941), and The Member of the Wedding (1946), which she wrote again as a play in 1950. Her short stories were collected in The Ballad of the Sad Cafe (1951).
