- the building that serves as the town hall (= local government offices) for the City of London. Grand meals and other events take place there on important occasions. The original building of 1411 was mostly destroyed in the Fire of London (1666), and the one built in its place was badly damaged by bombs in the Second World War. see also Mansion House
