- Eric Morecambe (1926-84) and Ernie Wise (1925-99), a pair of English television comedians who were very popular in the 1960s and 1970s. Their shows attracted extremely large audiences, particularly on Christmas Day, and they were popular with all sections of the public. Well-known people often appeared on the shows as guests and were made to look ridiculous. Eric made the jokes and Ernie was the serious one and the jokes were often about him. Several of their catchphrases became widely used in Britain and their shows are often repeated on British television. “The play wot I wrote.”
